How are community justice approaches—as opposed to the criminal justice system—employed to prevent violence and advance gender equality, justice, diversity, and/or inclusion? Where and how are men explicitly engaged in community justice efforts? Here we use “community justice” as an umbrella term to encompass alternative justice approaches, including transformative and restorative justice approaches, as they operate at the community level to prevent future violence and advance gender and social equality. This review, which should be considered an initial exploration of this approach that needs more robust examination, scans identified community justice literature and synthesizes key strengths, gaps, and lessons learned that can be applied to community-based accountability and justice efforts. For more information on other approaches, review FAQs on the 9 promising approaches for practitioners engaging men in violence prevention and gender equality.
