On January 13th, Elena Esina from Shift and Anita Harder from Calgary Women’s Emergency Shelter presented to the Curriculum Working Group, a body that is established by Alberta Education with a goal to develop curriculum in six subject areas (Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, Sciences, Arts, and Wellness Education). They delivered a presentation focused on inclusion of social-emotional learning programs in school curriculum, as a way of preventing violence before it occurs. Inclusion of social-emotional learning in the curriculum is critical, as it is directly linked to academic achievement, ethical citizenship, mental health and overall personal growth and well-being.
