Shift Endorses the Blueprint for a NAP on VAW

A Blueprint for Canada’s National Action Plan On Violence Against Women and Girls was created by 23 partner organizations who advocate to stop violence against women. The Blueprint outlines what a National Action Plan On Violence Against Women and Girls needs to include, a process for developing and implementing a national plan, and key elements that need to be included in a national plan. The Blueprint includes prevention measures, service responses, legal and justice responses and social policy responses, with an emphasis on educating children, youth and adults about:

  • human rights
  • promoting understanding of healthy relationships, consent and rape culture
  • breaking down sexual assault myths
  • encouraging bystander interventions
  • offering programs to foster self-esteem; and
  • working with men and boys to change attitudes and behaviours.

On May 27th, 2015, a motion to develop a National Action Plan on Violence Against Women and Girls was presented in the House of Commons, however, the motion was defeated. As we lead up to the October 19th election, it is important that all candidates address the issue of violence against women in campaign platforms.
